Host Organisation Interview Tips

As you move through the process of securing your internship, you will most likely need to have an interview with a host organisation, once your internship provider sources a potential match for you.

These interviews are really important, as with any other job, your host organisation has the final decision on whether to hire you or not.

A few tips to make sure your interview as successful as it can be!

  • Make sure you are getting your times/time zones correct! Your host organisation is in another time zone, so please triple check the time they have set for the interview against their time and your time. If you’re not sure – check!

  • Ensure you know the medium of the interview (Skype, WeChat, Zoom, phone etc.) and make sure you have an account, have tested the system and are ready a few minutes earlier than the agreed time

  • Research the company! This goes without saying, but make sure you have done some research into the organisation, what they do, any current news etc. Research the person conducting the interview if you can, check their LinkedIn and try and determine their role in the organisation

  • Think about why you want to work at that organisation and what you hope to gain from the experience. It’s also good to think about what you can bring to their organisation and why they should hire you

  • Have a few questions prepared. It is totally fine to ask more information about the role/project you will be working on, what your day to day will look like, how you can utilize the skills from your area of study at university. Remember, the internship must be in your major area of study (or as close as possible!)
