Next Steps

Things to consider and prepare for your discussions with your internship provider about your desired internship:

  • The type of tasks you would or would not like to complete during your internship
  • Projects or topics you have enjoyed studying or working on during your course
  • Future career goals and aspirations
  • Relevant skills or experiences you have already had in the industry or related fields
  • What you would like to gain from the internship (more than just ‘work experience’)

Please remember your internship must be in your major area of study. For students doing a double degree, your internship must relate to the academic unit you have chosen. You must advise your internship provider what you are studying, and seek an internship in that area. Your internship will not be approved by Swinburne if it is not relevant to your study area.

You will need to submit a copy of your resume to your internship provider, and this will be circulated to potential host organisations. We would strongly encourage you to utilise Swinburne’s online My Career Toolkit platform to refine and improve your resume. Receive individual, online feedback 24/7 and ensure your resume is relevant and professional, as this may impact on the host organisations that are interested in you.

You can access the Career Start Module, by logging in with your Student ID and password here.

Visa requirements

Please also clearify within this first discussion with the internship provider, whether they can advise you on the visa you will require or not. Ultimately, it is your responsibility to apply for the right visa at the right time. Please make sure to contact the consulate of your host country for advise on a suitable visa.

Flights

It is currently a requirement for all participants on international programs run by Swinburne to book flights via Swinburne's approved travel provider REHO travel. We highly recommend to hold off on booking flights until your internship is confirmed, however, should you decide to book earlier, please make sure to book flexible flights.
